Welcome!
My name is Patricia Bishop and I have been a clinical social worker for almost 20 years. My pup's name is Dudley and he is my best buddy. (You may meet him when you visit my office.)
Since I was a little girl, I have loved animals. Each time I have lost a pet, I felt they took a part of me with them. I believe our animal companions (dogs, cats, horses, rabbits, etc.) are important members of our family and life. They bring us joy, purpose and nonjudgmental companionship. I am honored to offer grief counseling for those who may be struggling or want support for a pending or recent loss.
Why Animal Companion Grief Counseling?
After a loss, we can struggle between the life we had and the reality we now are faced with. You can know they are gone, but not want to let them go. You feel alone and your home feels empty. You are struggling with letting go of their belongings.
Are you second-guessing your decisions and feeling guilty that you should have let them go sooner? Does it feel that no one understands why you are so upset?
Therapy provides a space for you to talk about how these are impacting your life.
How will therapy help?
Therapy can help you overcome feelings of sadness, disorientation, and/or guilt. Acknowledging the feelings and beliefs you are experiencing can help relieve some of the pain. I provide a supportive and non-judgmental environment where you can explore your mourning process, gain insights into your feelings/behavior, and develop strategies to manage your grief and move forward.
What can you expect?
I believe a good therapeutic relationship is essential to success. My approach to therapy is rooted in empathy, resilience and compassion. I can teach skills to help you manage day to day challenges. And, although it will not be the same as when they were here, we can also explore how to continue to feel connected with your beloved pet.
